Intacs: Prescription Inserts
Keratoconus, often
referred to as "KC" is an eye disease that causes
the cornea to become progressively thinner.
Patients with
keratoconus must not have LASIK or PRK laser eye
surgery due to an unacceptable risk of a poor
outcome.
The cornea in
keratoconus is unusually thin and weak. For patients
with keratoconus, LASIK surgery thins and weakens
their corneas further. This can irreversibly
destabilize the cornea and accelerate it's
distortion. Your doctor may recommend a surgical
procedure for keratoconus using Intacs prescription
inserts, more generically known as intra-stromal
corneal ring segment implantation.

It is a procedure
for patients intolerant of contact lenses but whose
disease has not progressed to the point of needing
to have a corneal transplant. This surgery involves
the placement of a tiny plastic segment inside the
cornea beneath the surface to reduce your
nearsightedness and astigmatism. Normally,
corrective lenses are still required after the
procedure to give you the best possible vision.
